In the United States, there are over 17,000 patients on the liver waiting list, but only enough donated livers to perform about 5,000 transplants per year. The MELD scoring system, which prioritizes patients waiting for a liver transplant, was created to facilitate fair allocation of donor livers. This video discusses how a patient's MELD score is determined and the risks that are involved in selecting options that may shorten the waiting time for a liver transplant. (#23523)
