Between 1980 and 1999, the Maoist party and guerrilla movement known as the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) unleashed the most violent armed conflict in Peru's republican history, which claimed nearly 70,0000 lives. Carlos Ivan Degregori was part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that investigated the crimes and human rights violations committed during that conflict. Degregori is an internationally-renowned author, journalist, and public intellectual. He is best known for his works on the Shining Path and the current political process in Peru. He is a senior researcher and former director of the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos and professor of Anthropology at the Universidad de San Marcos in Lima. He has taught at several universities world wide and is currently lecturing at Princeton University. (#9922)
