Another Take on the FSM: Challenges to Free Speech in a Polarized Era

1/19/2015; 88 minutes

Fifty years after the Free Speech Movement, engagement in civic life can still involve challenging authority and current policy. But it is consensus through civil discourse - not just protest or partisan opposition for its own sake - which holds the greatest promise for inspiring public involvement and stimulating social progress. Panelists Henry E. Brady, Robin Lakoff and Waldo E. Martin, Jr. discuss civility and free speech in a polarized society - particularly as they play out in university settings - and address the ways public institutions can best foster thoughtful conversations, spirited debate, and constructive dissent. Moderated by Richard "Dick" Beahrs ('68). Recorded on 10/11/2014. (#28872)
