Jazz legend Wayne Shorter composed his first chamber piece,Terra Incognita, with the same boldness and eloquence that has fueled his own improvisationally charged playing. As performed by the innovative Imani Winds quintet, Shorter's 15-minute opus utilizes an episodic structure in which motifs ebb, flow and evaporate, only to return in perfectly logical new forms. The cumulative effect is playful and melancholic, edgy and lyrical, earthy and urbane, sometimes all at once. (#12085)
