Thank you for visiting The STEAM Channel to learn about UC San Diego Extension's innovative pre-college education programs. The STEAM Channel showcases the value of adding the arts - the "a" in "STEAM" - to science, technology, engineering and math education. We believe that encouraging students to tap into their creativity empowers them to solve all kinds of problems.

For a lively look of some of our newest programs, check out "What Is Sally Ride Science@UC San Diego?" It traces the evolution of Sally Ride Science, a company founded in 2001 by astronaut Sally Ride and her partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, along with three friends. Their vision was to inspire girls and boys of all backgrounds to study science and to imagine themselves in science and technology careers.

Today, Sally Ride Science is part of UC San Diego, under Extension's direction. We are building on the founders' vision with engaging new programs, including:

  • Sally Ride Science Junior Academy: The academy offers hands-on summer workshops and classes that let students in grades 6 through 12 delve into an array of exciting STEAM activities, from flying drones and hunting fossils to exploring deep-sea ecosystems and designing websites.
  • Library NExT: This partnership between San Diego Public Library and UC San Diego brings free Sally Ride Science STEAM workshops to library branches around San Diego. Subjects range from Messy Science and Tiny-House Architecture to Video Game Design and Physics of Fidget Spinners.

In addition, The STEAM Channel highlights the Qualcomm® Thinkabit Lab™, which allows students to engage in fun, hands-on engineering projects. Students work in small groups as "start-up companies" and use the design process to dream up inventions in consumer electronics, smart homes, smart cities, and voice and music.

There's a lot going on! Keep checking The STEAM Channel for news about these and other great programs.
